What Is a Yoni Massage? An Honest Guide
Yoni massage is a slow, attentive massage for women. It starts as a full-body massage and gradually moves its focus to the intimate area, with no pressure to reach any goal. Much of what’s written about it online is either vague or sold as a spiritual cure, so we’ve tried to keep this guide plain and accurate. What the word means Yoni is a Sanskrit word. Its literal meanings are “source”, “origin” or “womb”, and in Indian religious texts it also names the female genitals as a symbol of creative power, the counterpart of the male lingam. When you see it translated as “sacred space”, that’s the meaning modern tantric massage gives the word, not the literal one. The modern meaning still says something true about the practice: it treats a part of the body many women have learned to be self-conscious about as something to approach slowly and with respect. Where it comes from Classical tantra grew up in India more than a thousand years ago. It differed from many traditions around it in treating the body, the breath and the senses as a way towards awareness rather than something to rise above. It did not, however, include a massage called “yoni massage”. The yoni massage offered today in Europe developed much later, in the 1970s and 80s, out of neo-tantra and the Western bodywork movement, which combined tantric ideas with massage technique. That’s useful to know when choosing where to go. A good session uses ideas from tantra, namely breath, slowness and full attention, without claiming to be an ancient temple rite. How a session unfolds At our centre, yoni massage is the women’s version of our tantric massage. It follows the same ritual as the men’s version, at the same price. An hour typically goes like this: What makes it different from almost every other kind of intimate touch is that it isn’t working towards anything. There’s no finish line you have to reach. Some women do climax and many don’t, and the massage is just as good either way. Many women tell us that taking the goal away is exactly what lets them feel more. What women often notice These are things clients describe to us, not medical claims. A massage isn’t a treatment for any condition. Choosing who does it This matters more for a yoni massage than for any other treatment we offer, so choose for yourself. Some women prefer a woman, and any of our masseuses can do it. Others would rather be with a man. Tony is our masseur, and many women ask for him by name. Have a look through the team and tell us who you’d like when you book. Booking your first one If you’ve never had any kind of tantric massage, read what to expect at a first visit as well. It covers finding us, the shower and how the session ends. With a couples massage at the tantric level (from €230 for 60 minutes), one practitioner massages each of you in turn, and your partner can watch or take part. It’s also an easy way for a partner to learn by watching. Mention it when you message us and we’ll set the session up for the two of you.
